What are Carbohydrates?

As vital macronutrients, along with dietary fat and protein, carbs play a fundamental role in supporting our bodily functions. They come in three primary forms: starches, sugars, and fiber. Once we consume carbs, our bodies work their magic, breaking down starches and sugars into glucose, which serves as the body's preferred source of fuel. Glucose, also known as blood sugar, is like the energy currency that powers our cells and fuels our daily activities. It's the driving force behind everything from thinking and moving to breathing and even sleeping. Without a doubt, carbs are the true MVPs that keep our bodies going strong.

 

Diet Culture Demonizes Carbs

 Why are Carbs Preferred for Energy?

When it comes to fueling our bodies, carbs take center stage for a good reason. It's all about optimizing the functioning of our cells. You see, our cells thrive on a specific level of carbohydrates. These carbs provide us with the vital glucose, which happens to be the preferred fuel for our brain, nervous system, and red blood cells.

Believe it or not, even minor changes in our carb intake can have a significant impact on our bodies. When we fall short on carb consumption, our liver's glycogen stores begin to deplete. Although there is some stored glycogen that can be released into the bloodstream, it's a limited supply and usually lasts only 3 to 6 hours, excluding sleep. So, in order to replenish these vital stores, we need to make sure we're getting enough carbs in our diet.

When our carb intake drops, our bodies need to find alternative ways to generate glucose for energy. The next available source is the protein from our muscles, but it's far from being the body's preferred option. Increasing protein consumption won't prevent the use of muscle as an energy source. In fact, if our carb intake remains insufficient, the protein we consume will also be utilized as fuel. This can lead to rapid weight loss, but it's actually the loss of protein tissues. Moreover, for every pound of protein lost during this process, around 3 to 4 pounds of water are also lost.

Some people hold the belief that when we restrict our energy intake, our bodies automatically turn to burning fat for fuel. However, only a small fraction, about 5%, of stored fat can be converted into glucose. Instead, the body relies on protein conversion because it possesses the necessary enzymes for this process. During a low-carb or fasting diet, the body can eventually adapt to using fat as an energy source for the brain and nervous system through a state called ketosis. However, it's important to note that this is not the body's ideal state.

While very low-carb diets such as the popular ketogenic diet have shown some success in treating epilepsy in children, they come with a multitude of side effects. These side effects include hyperlipidemia, osteoporosis, kidney stones, improper growth, and decreased exercise performance. It's crucial to consider these drawbacks before embarking on such a restrictive dietary approach.

 

Why Carbs are Truly Essential

Carbs are not the enemy; in fact, they play a vital role in our overall health and well-being. First and foremost, carbs are powerful allies in the fight against various diseases. By embracing fiber-rich unrefined carbohydrates, we can maintain stable blood sugar levels and promote a healthy heart. Including fiber in our carb-rich meals acts as a guardian, diligently regulating the digestion of sugars and reducing the risk of diabetes. Furthermore, a diet abundant in fiber helps eliminate cholesterol, acting as a shield against cardiovascular disease.

But that's not all—carbs have an undeniable impact on our digestive health. To keep our digestive system functioning optimally and maintain regularity, we need an adequate intake of fiber. And here's the catch: fiber is exclusively found in carbohydrate-rich foods. So, if you want to keep your digestive system happy, make sure you aim for a daily intake of 23-35 grams of fiber, adjusting based on your starting point.

Complex carbs are the unsung heroes when it comes to balancing and satisfying a meal. They work tirelessly to slow down digestion, ensuring that you feel fuller for longer. It's important to emphasize that carbs are the body's preferred source of energy. So, if you're striving to enhance your intake of nutrient-dense carbs, turn to nature's bounty—indulge in an array of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Not only will you create a balanced and diverse diet, but you'll also satisfy your cravings while reaping the benefits of fiber. And let's not forget that skipping carbs during meals often leads to that ravenous feeling shortly after. Carbs bring harmony when combined with other essential components like protein and fats, making your meal truly complete.
